Jubilant SUA Exhibitors Celebrate Victories in Simiyu and Morogoro Agricultural Shows

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has participated in 2020 agricultural shows (Nanenane) at national level in Simiyu and at eastern zone in Morogoro. At national level, the event was officially opened by H.E. Samia Hassan Suluhu, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania on 1st August 2020 at Nyakabindi Nanenane grounds in Simiyu and officially closed on 8th August 2020 by Hon. Kassim Majaliwa Majaliwa, the Prime Minister of United Republic of Tanzania (MP). At eastern zone, the opening ceremony was officiated by Hon. Prof. Paramagamba Kabudi, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation (MP) whereas the official closing ceremony was done by Ummy Mwalimu, the Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MP).

Overall, SUA won three awards; a trophy and a certificate for first winner in the category of Colleges and Universities at national level exhibitions in Simiyu whereas SUA won a certificate for the third winner in the public organizations category at eastern zone shows in Morogoro.

Sokoine University of Agriculture displayed courses offered at the University Campuses in Morogoro and Mizengo Pinda Campus in Katavi, and exhibited various research outputs. Technologies and innovations displayed were soil testing techniques such as the use of mobile soil testing laboratory, detection of landmines and tuberculosis using Hero Rats, control of pests using various techniques including mechanical means such as Barrier Trap System in maize fields, and biological control of pests including an amazing use of owl birds. Other displays were livestock feeds, production and preservation of pasture, mobile phone Afya Data technology for reporting and diagnosis of livestock and zoonotic diseases, vaccination of dogs against rabies, preservation of animal vaccines in areas lacking electricity and research on zoonotic diseases transmitted by non-human primates such as baboons, and bats and rats. Other displays were crop demonstrations, including organic farming, tree harvesting technology, beehives and bee products and affordable houses. Other exhibits were dairy cattle, production of pigs and rabbits, fish farming and systems for production of local chickens. Other displays included farm implements, digital irrigation techniques using mobile phone, processed food materials, ICT technologies used at SUA, timber rush research outputs, RIPPAT SUA/RECODA extension approach, wildlife prototypes, weather forecast station, production of soaps and sanitizers. Other displays were printed materials on various topics including books, posters and brochures.
